Same year. Same truck. Different radio. That is the single most common reason a Dodge RAM head unit gets returned — a 2015 RAM 1500 with manual climate controls takes a completely different unit than a 2015 RAM with automatic climate controls, even though the dash looks similar at a glance. This guide walks you through the three things that actually decide fitment on a RAM: model year, A/C control type, and screen size — then points you to the exact unit.
Quick answer: match your RAM to the right unit
| Your RAM | A/C controls | Recommended unit | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2002–2005 RAM 1500 / 2500 / 3500 | Either | Android 15 unit for 2002–2005 RAM | $149.99 |
| 2009–2012 RAM 1500 / 2500 / 3500 | Either | 7″ unit for 2009–2012 or 10.1″ unit for 2009–2012 | $159.99 / $269.99 |
| 2013–2019 (Classic) — manual A/C | Manual (knobs / 3-dial) | 9″ manual-A/C unit · 10.4″ T-style unit | $139.99 / $389.99 |
| 2013–2019 (Classic) — automatic A/C | Auto (digital display) | 9″ auto-A/C unit (ZD) · 9″ auto-A/C DSP unit | $139.99 / $199.99 |
| 2019–2023 new body (12″ factory screen) | Either | 12.1″ Tesla-style unit | $589.99 |
Step 1: Confirm your model year (and watch the 2019 split)
RAM changed the dash twice in the years we cover, so year alone is not enough — check that the body style matches:
- 2002–2005 (3rd gen) — round-edged dash, double-DIN opening. Straightforward swap.
- 2009–2012 (4th gen) — the dash where the factory radio sits in a wide, sloped bezel. Fits 7″ and 10.1″ units.
- 2013–2019 Classic (4th gen facelift) — this is where A/C type matters (see Step 2). Both 9″ and 10.4″ T-style units exist for this generation.
- 2019–2023 (5th gen, new body) — the truck with the huge 12″ portrait screen from the factory. 2019 is a split year: the 2019 Classic is the old body (use the 2013–2019 unit), while the 2019 new body needs the 12.1″ unit. If you are not sure, the giveaway is the factory screen: portrait 12″ = new body.
Step 2: Manual A/C vs Automatic A/C — the #1 return reason
On 2013–2019 Classic RAMs, the climate control panel is physically different between trims: base trims use a manual panel with three rotary knobs, higher trims use an automatic panel with a digital display and buttons. The head unit has to talk to whichever one is in your truck. Order the wrong one and the radio fits, but the A/C readout and controls stop working.
How to tell in 10 seconds
- Manual: three round knobs (fan / temperature / mode), no temperature numbers on screen.
- Automatic: a small digital display showing a temperature (e.g. 72°F), plus buttons for AUTO, dual-zone, defrost.
- Dual-zone? That is automatic — order the auto-A/C unit.
How our SKUs are named (so you can double-check the cart)
Auto-A/C versions carry the ZD suffix in the SKU; manual versions do not. For example XT892SCRAM319 = manual A/C, while XT892CRAM319ZD = automatic A/C. The product title and description also spell out "Only Fit Manual AC" or "Only Fit Automatic AC" — read that line before you check out.
| A/C type | Unit to order | SKU pattern |
|---|---|---|
| Manual (3 knobs) | 9″ manual-A/C · 10.4″ T-style · 10.6″ manual · 7″ manual |
XT892SCRAM319, XT8192SCXRAM319, GT614DXRAM319
|
| Automatic (digital) | 9″ auto-A/C · 9″ auto-A/C DSP |
XT892CRAM319ZD, XT594RAM319ZD

Step 3: Pick your screen size
All of these replace the factory radio with a full touchscreen running Android 15 with wireless CarPlay and Android Auto. The difference is how much dash you want to occupy — and how the finished install looks.
| Size | Look | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 7″ | Compact, close to stock footprint | Owners who want a clean, factory-like look and don't need a huge screen |
| 9″ | Fills the bezel, still flush | The most popular choice — good map visibility without covering vents |
| 10.4″ T-style | Wide, Tesla-like, sits above the dash line | Owners who want a modern, premium look and use split-screen navigation |
| 10.6″ | Large floating screen with a Qualcomm chip | Faster response, more RAM (4GB+64GB), heavy CarPlay/map users |
| 12.1″ | Portrait, replaces the factory 12″ screen 1:1 | 2019–2023 new-body trucks (see Step 1) |

Five fitment traps that cause most RAM returns
- Manual vs automatic A/C. Covered above — this is the big one. If your truck has a digital climate display, you need the ZD version.
- 2019 is two different trucks. The 2019 Classic uses the 2013–2019 dash; the 2019 new body uses the 12.1″ portrait screen. Check the factory screen shape before ordering.
- Factory amplifier / premium audio. If your RAM has a factory Alpine or Harman system with an external amplifier, tell us before ordering — an additional harness may be required so the amp keeps working. Standard 6-speaker trucks plug straight in.
- Factory 8.4″ Uconnect vs 12″ screen. Trucks that came with the 8.4″ landscape Uconnect (2013–2018) and trucks with the 12″ portrait screen (2019+) use completely different dash kits — they are not interchangeable.
- Steering wheel controls and backup camera. Both are retained on our RAM units when the correct CANBUS box is included (it is, by default). If you have an aftermarket camera, use the RCA input on the harness instead of the factory camera plug.
5-minute self-check before you order
- ✅ Model year and body style (Classic vs new body for 2019).
- ✅ A/C panel: three knobs = manual; digital temperature readout = automatic.
- ✅ Screen size you want (7″ / 9″ / 10.4″ / 10.6″ / 12.1″).
- ✅ Factory amplifier? Look for an Alpine/Harman badge on the speaker grilles or a subwoofer behind the rear seat.
- ✅ Take one photo of your dash with the radio on — our support team can confirm fitment from it in minutes.
What you keep, what changes
Kept: steering wheel controls, factory backup camera (where equipped), USB/AUX ports, factory A/C behaviour (with the correct manual/auto version), and the factory look of the dash.
Changed: the radio interface itself is now Android 15 — wireless CarPlay and Android Auto, Google Maps/Waze, Spotify, and downloadable apps. The factory Uconnect interface is replaced.
FAQ
Will this fit my 2015 RAM 1500 with dual-zone climate?
Dual-zone means automatic A/C — order the ZD (automatic) version. The manual unit will fit physically but the climate controls will not work correctly.
Do I lose my steering wheel buttons?
No. The included CANBUS decoder keeps volume, track and phone buttons working. You can remap them in the settings menu.
Can I keep my factory backup camera?
Yes on trucks that came with one from the factory — the harness has a dedicated camera input. Aftermarket cameras connect to the RCA input instead.
Is the 12.1″ unit really plug-and-play on a 2021 RAM?
Yes for 2019–2023 new-body trucks that came with the 12″ portrait screen. It reuses the factory mounting points and connectors.
Will Android Auto work wirelessly?
Yes — both wireless CarPlay and wireless Android Auto are built in. Wired connection is also supported.
What if I order the wrong A/C version?
Contact us within 30 days and we will arrange an exchange for the correct version. Send a photo of your climate panel first so we can confirm before shipping.
Not sure which one? Send us a photo.
Email support@awesafeinc.com with: your model year, a photo of the dash with the radio on, and a photo of the A/C panel. We will reply with the exact unit — usually within one business day. You can also check our fitment FAQ and customer reviews before you buy.
